Effective August 3, 2026, Italian paper identity cards and Greek identity cards without a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) will no longer be accepted as valid travel documents for international travel.
Italy: For international travel, only the electronic identity card (Carta d'Identità Elettronica – CIE) or a valid passport will be accepted.
Greece: This change applies exclusively to Greek nationals holding old-style identity cards without a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ). For travel within the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, the Schengen Area, and other countries that have previously accepted the Greek identity card as a travel document, travellers must present either the new ID-1 format identity card or a valid passport.
Transitional Arrangement until September 30, 2026
Until 30 September 2026, Greek nationals holding an old-style identity card may continue to travel to and from Germany under a transitional arrangement, provided that the entire travel itinerary is completed within this period. From 1 October 2026, only the new ID-1 format Greek identity card or a valid Greek passport will be accepted for travel to and from Germany.
